Life aboard a Steamer to the New World in 1880

Life in an 1880 steamer, and ever so more in the tall sailing ships, was something the land lovers did not do well in. There was much sickness and disease in the cramped quarters, especially if you were traveling 3rd class and "steerage", no less than excess baggage for the long voyage. There was little privacy, showers or fresh water for most of the trip. Food was often foul and many traveled the entire trip with little access to the open decks.
